Authentic thoughts from my journey in building durable happiness through community service, family relationships, and spiritual practice. These are real posts from my social media accounts, reflecting my genuine experiences and perspectives.
After 20 years of community organizing, I've learned that sustainable change doesn't come from grand gestures—it comes from showing up consistently. Whether it's our weekly volunteer shift at Hopelink or the monthly neighborhood cleanup, consistency builds trust. And trust builds community. Small actions, repeated over time, create the foundation for durable happiness. #CommunityBuilding #DurableHappiness
Me explaining to my kids why we meditate before family cricket practice: 'It's not about winning, it's about being present with each other' Them: 'Dad, can we just play?' Me: *takes deep breath* 'Yes, but mindfully' 😅 #FamilyCricket #Mindfulness #ParentingWins
Grateful for today's Sanskrit study session. The word 'Santosha' (contentment) keeps appearing in my reading. It's not about being satisfied with less—it's about finding joy in what IS while working toward what COULD BE. This perfectly captures my approach to community work: appreciating current connections while building toward greater collective flourishing. Ancient wisdom for modern community builders. 🕉️
🎉 Our community garden just harvested 500 pounds of vegetables for the local food bank! What started as a small hydroponic experiment in my garage has grown into something beautiful. 15 families now participate, kids are learning where food comes from, and neighbors who never spoke are now planning next season together. Proof that when you plant seeds of service, they multiply in ways you never expect. #CommunityGarden #ServiceMultiplies
Elder care taught me that listening is a form of service. My father-in-law doesn't need me to fix his stories or correct his memories. He needs me to witness them. Sometimes the most powerful thing we can offer another person is our complete presence. This applies to community work too—before we try to solve, we must truly hear. #ElderCare #ListeningAsService
Question for my network: How do you balance individual growth with community responsibility? I'm seeing more people struggle with this tension—wanting to improve themselves while feeling guilty about not doing 'enough' for others. My take: Self-care isn't selfish when it enables better service. You can't pour from an empty cup. But I'm curious about your perspectives. How do you navigate this balance?
Nonprofit board meetings be like: 9am: 'We need to think bigger!' 10am: 'But we need to be realistic' 11am: 'What if we just... helped one more family?' 12pm: *unanimous agreement* Sometimes the smallest steps create the biggest impact. One family at a time. 🏠❤️ #NonprofitLife #SmallStepsBigImpact
Today marks 20 years since our first community picnic. Started with 8 families in a local park, now we have 200+ people from 15+ countries sharing food, stories, and laughter. Watching kids who were toddlers at the first picnic now bringing their own children... this is what durable happiness looks like. Not a moment of joy, but a tradition of connection that spans generations. Already planning year 21! 🥳🌍
